Gauteng Champs

9 November 2017

This past weekend saw our u16 and Junior Open rowers partake in the Gauteng Championships held in Pretoria. For our u16's it meant their first 2km race having previously only raced 1km for their sprint racing. The grade 10’s or new Junior Opens also had their own mammoth task in that they were being entered into the first 8’s events consisting of crews who have been training since June. At the end of the day experience was the key goal and experience is what each of these age groups achieved. Our seniors had a tough time in the 8 where they came 8th whilst the smaller boats showed greater promise with the coxless four coming in 4th and the coxed four coming in at 6th. The u16s stole the show for the weekend. In the coxed four our boys narrowly missed the gold after having lead for 1,9km of the 2km race only to be pipped on the line by St. Johns. They got the silver and missed gold by 0,15s. The coxless four narrowly missed the bronze medal by 0,25s. In the 8, which St. Benedicts have been dominating this season, our u16s were leading the race through the half way mark however were unable to maintain the fast pace that they set. This was enough to hold onto the silver medal and a very good performance over all. Could the following boys come up and recieve their medals. Declan Watling; Stefan Breytenbach; Mitchell Fussell; Matthew dix-peek; Oliver Kane-smith; Oliver Werner; Nicky Sieff; Francis Bayly and David Boyes.
