The Mitre Red

The Wine
For the 175 Celebration, The Drift Estate has produced The Mitre Red, a friendly, juicy, mostly Bourdeaux variety blend that can be enjoyed now, but which will surprise many with its ability to age and develop in complexity over the next 5 to 8 years. The Mitre Red is blended from Cabernet Sauvignon 44%, Merlot 37% and Petit Verdot 19%.

The Maker
Bruce Jack (Gray OD) started in wine retail when he was in Grade 10. For the last 30 years he has been a winemaker, planting his own vineyards in the Overberg Highlands in 2000. Regarded by many (although not himself) as a trail-blazing wine entrepreneur he also runs winemaking projects in Chile, California, Spain and Canada. From his early award-winning wines at Flagstone to his boutique wines from The Drift Estate, he has consistently produced wines of significance and elegance. This wine is made on The Drift Estate and is a special once-off blend, specially crafted to celebrate the 175th anniversary of a school very close to his heart. Bruce founded the HeadStart Trust, in honour of his mother, who taught music at Bishops. This PBO uplifts local community schools through music education. He also publishes a high-end magazine called Jack Journal.

The Crits
Lovely aromas of black cherry, raspberry and violet. Silky tannins, juicy and generous. Pairs beautifully with Mediterranean dishes, definitely a great option for a summer red wine. Tarryn Vincent (Wine Competition Judge)
Red and black berries with earth and spice on the nose while the palate is luscious and juicy with moderate acidity and soft tannins. Not super-complex but still a most appealing wine. Christian Eedes (Editor of Winemag.co.za and OD)
