Overview

Surfing at Bishops can be taken as a major sport as it provides a full body workout, whilst allowing the boys to get out into the ocean and enjoy themselves.

Membership is open to all grades, but as places are limited, senior boys are given priority. It is primarily a winter sport (with regular outings on Wednesdays and Fridays), but when conditions are right, we continue in the summer terms, too. We go where the swell and wind direction dictates.

Locally, the options are any of Muizenberg, Long Beach, Outer Kom, Witsands, Dunes, Misty Cliffs, Scarborough, Llandudno and Derde Steen. Twice a year, a week-end away is undertaken. Again, swell and wind are criteria, but Elands Bay and Betty's Bay are favourite destinations. Grade 9 boys have the option to join the Activities Week Surf Camp at Vic Bay in December, and boys who attend this camp are given preference when it comes to Bishops Surf Club membership.

Vision

Bishops is one of the leading schools in South Africa as far as sport is concerned and our reputation for sporting excellence is world-wide. In keeping with the ethos of our school, we believe that sport plays a vital role in the development of young men. In particular, we believe that participation in a team sport enhances the educational experience. To this end, it is a school rule that all boys must play an official school sport during both summer and winter terms.
