Subject Music

Music as a subject in Grades 10-12 provides students with a thorough theoretical background to music as well as a general overview of different musical styles. The course offers an excellent opportunity to develop artistic and creative skills as part of the academic curriculum. Included in this curriculum is extensive exposure to music technology and relevant computer software, as well as the workings of the music industry (the latter is a new component which is part of the FET syllabus). A large portion of the course is practical, which includes both solo and ensemble work (with the FET syllabus there is more attention given to ensemble work).

Piano Tuition
Theory Lessons
Clarinet Tuition
Aural Lessons

It is expected for subject pupils to be a member of the choir and/or an ensemble, as the music department feels this is core to the pupils’ overall musical development. Lessons on a boy’s first musical instrument are free for pupils taking Subject Music in Grades 10-12 and 50% discounted in Grades 8 and 9. It is important to note that learners must have their own laptop since we use software in support of home practice routines and exercises.

We offer two streams of subject Music: Boys taking the advanced stream (based on pre-2006 requirements) are required to have passed Grade 4 practical and Grade 5 theory by the end of their Grade 9 year, with the aim of reaching Grade 7 (or above) practical level by Matric. However, in line with FET, we also offer a second stream for pupils who have passed Grade 2 practical and Grade 3 theory level by the end of their Grade 9 year, with the aim of reaching Grade 5 practical level by Matric.

Arts and Culture

All pupils in Grades 8 and 9 experience music through the Arts and Culture learning area (of which Music is one of the components, the others being Drama and Art). This programme aims to give pupils a very wide exposure to music in general, including many different styles of music, music technology, and exposing pupils to different career options in the music field.
