Bishops Avenue Mile

6 March 2019

Bishops Avenue Mile. The 31st Avenue Mile race took place on Founders Day. It was good to see boys from all Houses and grades taking part in the event. The race was won by Oliver Stewart in a record time of 4 minutes and 29 seconds. Julian Dower finished second in a commendable time of 5 minutes flat, and Tom Byron was third in the senior section of the race. Ben Derman came third overall and first in the junior section of the race. The second junior home was Luke Davis followed by Abdul Kerbelker. It is appropriate that we acknowledge Oliver Stewart as the best middle distance runner in the 170 year history of Bishops. He holds several age group records but in particular he holds the record for the U19 1500 meters, the U19 Triangular 1500 meters and the Avenue Mile. If you have been watching Oliver this season you will know he is a talented runner, but he trains very hard, and races courageously. On both Sports Day and the Triangular afternoon he had a crack at the 800m records early in the meetings and then went on to brake the 1500m records later in the day. This required a huge amount of guts, resolve and tenacity. Congratulations, Oliver, on an amazing season and all the best for your club, provincial and national races coming up in the next few weeks.
