The Life Sciences department started a brand-new initiative this year which saw the Grade 8 learners raise well over R15 000 worth of groceries for a local orphanage.
This initiative was integrated into our syllabus as a CASS Project. The learners were tasked with fundraising to produce food parcels for the needy. They then wrote a report and presented their experience to their classmates. This project was linked with the topics on Food Sciences and Food security which we covered in the 3rd and 4th Terms. The boys did a magnificent job and exceeded all our expectations.
Vision Child and Youth Centre is a non-profit organisation (NPO) dedicated to the aid of children who have been orphaned or abandoned. They provide children with the safety and security of a home and ensure they receive an education. Children as young as a few days old are taken in and cared for. The organisation is in dire need of support and we as a department felt they were the perfect recipients of the parcels.
After the project, one of the boys gave the following feedback:
“This has been one of the highlights of the year in Life Sciences. Doing a school project that helps people felt amazing, and visiting the orphanage and meeting the other kids is something I’ll never forget.”
