On Heritage Day, the 25th of September 2025, the History Society embarked on an outing to Ysterplaat Air Force Base. The primary attraction for the day was the ground run of the Avro Shackleton, a long-range maritime reconnaissance plane produced in the previous century for both the RAF and the SAAF.

 

The Society members present enjoyed an outing of learning about the history of the SAAF, its involvement in various war throughout the previous century and its technological advancements. Another enjoyable aspect of the trip was being afforded the opportunity to climb into various aircraft and helicopters, including bomber-planes and fighter aircraft used during the Cold War (i.e., the Border War in Angola as far as the SAAF was concerned).
