This year we had a number of musicians from the Bishops Music Department enter the Cape Town Eisteddfod, including some of the ensembles from the Chamber Music programme which has been run this year. The following are congratulated on outstanding achievements:
 
Individual Performances
 
Piano Solo
 
Ben Karlein:
Obtained a Diploma for JS BACH performance and High Honours for Modern Piano Music. Ben was also the recipient of the Denise Blumenthal Medal for the most outstanding performance of a work by J.S. Bach.
 
Michael Comitis:
Was awarded two Gold Diplomas and was also the recipient of the Harburger medal for the most diplomas in the age group of 15-16 years  (not in assembly – on Epic)
 
James Grieve:
Was awarded a  High Honours  for Classical Piano playing and a Gold Diploma for Contemporary Piano playing and was also the recipient of The Kawai medal for the best contemporary piano performance 15-16 years.
 
 
Ensemble Performances
 
The Grade 8 String Quartet which comprises of:

Heath Williams
Were awarded the prize for the Best String Quartet (Senior School)
 
 
The Piano Trio which comprises of:
David Handley 
James Grieve 
Ben Karlein
Were awarded the prize for the Best Senior School Trio
 
Hubert Van Der Spuy Music Competition:
 
Earlier in the year Kieran Hollis (Gr8) participated in the Hubert van Der Spuy Music Competition which involves High School music pupils from all over the country – Kieran made it through to the third round – a wonderful achievement.
 
 
ABRSM London Music Examinations:
 
We are still not able to have in-person examinations with the ABRSM, London, but This year pupils were able to enter an ABRSM Royal Schools Performance exam. They had to make a video of themselves performing 4 pieces and send the recording to London for marking. The following boys did exceptionally well and achieved a distinction for their Performance exam:
 
Matthew Newton - Piano, grade 6
Gabriel Comitis - Violin, grade 6
Kieran Hollis - Violin, grade 6
Jesse Barth - Singing, grade 8
Kwon Hee Kim - Violin, grade 8
Robert Handley - Saxophone, Grade 8
Their certificates have not arrived yet, but we congratulate them on their excellent achievement.
 
 
Internal Music Examinations:
The Bishops Music Department held internal music exams this year, due to covid restrictions with external exams. Congratulations to the following, who achieved a distinction for their exam:
Ben Karlein - Piano, grade 7
Michael Beaument - Voice, grade 7
Felix de Bruin - Voice, grade 7
Sebastian Boeddinghaus - Piano, grade 8
Ben Reid – 2 exams: Double bass, grade 3 and Piano, grade 7
